Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain could be acute (Sudden) or chronic.

Chronic pelvic pain is defined as intermittent or constant pain which has been on going for not less than six months duration.

Possible causes of Pelvic Pain:

  • Infection (PID)
  • Endometriosis
  • Adhesion (Scar tissue) due to infection or previous surgery
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Menstrual pain
  • Pelvic vascular engorgement
  • Fibroid degeneration
  • Musculo-skeletal
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • No cause may be found on investigation.

Acute causes of Pelvic Pain may be due to:

  • Acute episode of infection
  • Ectopic pregnancy if pregnancy test is positive
  • Unruptured/ruptured
  • Bleeding into ovarian cysts
  • Ovarian cyst torsion
  • Appendicitis
  • Acute on chronic episode of those conditions listed on chronic pelvic pain

Pelvic Pain Investigations:

May include:
  • Vaginal/endocervical swabs
  • Scan
  • CT/MRI
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Laparoscopy


Treatment will depend on the cause.
